MONTROSE LOCAL TENANTS
The rapid gentrification of the Montrose neighborhood is an attack on the rich queer history of the neighborhood and its important community. Once a safe haven for the LGBTQIA+ and working class community, it is now becoming impossible to afford for many low income and aging tenants. The changing neighborhood dynamics also exposes the LGBTQIA+ community to potential housing discrimination from new landlords who have no interest in maintaining a safe place for them. Turning a historically affordable and inclusive neighborhood into a place of expensive, unattainable high rises and mansions turned quadplex starting at $1,500 for a one bedroom is unacceptable. With Montrose’s long history of emphasizing community, and it’s current population of vocal left leaning tenants, we believe the Montrose Local will become a major force for tenant organizing in Houston.
